Wise Readers to Leaders Junior Literacy Leader (JLL) Application Summer 2020

Thank you for your interest in being a Junior Literacy Leader (“JLL”) for summer 2020! As a JLL, you will serve as a teaching assistant and mentor to K-7 students.

Please take note as some of our policies and practices have changed since last year. JLLs will be assigned their site and date placements
on a first-come first-served basis, additionally factoring in the needs of Wise Readers to Leaders. In order to apply to be a JLL, you must first submit this application. JLLs who submit their applications before the Priority Application Deadline will get first priority in selecting their preferences for the summer. After the Priority Application Deadline, a Preference Form will be sent out asking you to indicate your preferred site placement, available weeks, age of scholars with whom you would like to work, and 2-3 friends with whom you would like to be placed, as well as payment of the contribution fee. It is in your best interest to submit applications as soon as you can to secure your desired sites and dates of participation.

Applications and Preferences will be reviewed under the following deadlines:
February 28th--Priority Application Deadline. Applications submitted on or before this date will be given first priority for dates, sites, scholar age, and friend placement.
March 1st through March 15th--Returning JLLs who submitted by the Priority Deadline will be able to submit their Preference Form, indicating their preferences for dates, sites, scholar age, and friends.
March 15th through March 30th--New JLLs who submitted by the Priority Deadline will be able to submit their Preference Form.
30th through May 30th--JLLs who submit their applications after the Priority Deadline will be able to submit their Preference Form on a rolling basis.

Please know that wherever you are placed, we can assure you that you will have an incredible summer and will form wonderful relationships with our scholars!

JLLs are required to volunteer for at least two consecutive weeks between June 22nd and July 31st from 8 am to 3 pm. Mandatory New JLL Training, for those teens who have never participated as a JLL before, will take place June 18th from 9 am to 4 pm at Stephen Wise Temple. All JLLs are required to attend classroom set up on June 19th from 9 to 3 pm, starting at Stephen Wise Temple and then proceeding to your assigned site.

To be considered for a position, each applicant that is new to the program must participate in an interview. After you apply we will reach out to you to schedule your interview. Interviews will be held on February 23rd from 1 pm to 2 pm and March 22nd 12:30 pm to 2 pm. (Returning JLLs do not need to interview again.)

The JLL Summer Contribution

Our JLL program and our larger programs exist because of generous financial support from individuals and families such as yours. We suggest a $500 contribution for two weeks of volunteering and $100 for each subsequent week. Families making a contribution of at least $1500 to support the Readers to Leaders program (the amount to sponsor one scholar) are exempt from this contribution for any number of children.

This contribution not only sustains the program, but truly shows a familial commitment to healing the world and making a difference. We encourage our JLLs and their families to view this contribution as an opportunity to live important values, such as generosity, commitment to community and authentic relationship building.

With that being said, we do not want financial hardship to be a limiting factor to any teen or family. Please reach out to Liesel at so that we can make an arrangement that is suitable to your family.
